Rexonola’s ‘Prismatic Horn’—patented 1926

The ‘Prismatic’ horn was an evolution of its predecessor: the 1912 patented, simple timber internal horn design referred to as the Rexonola ‘Reflector Sound Chamber’. The cut-away drawings below demonstrate how the new horn was adapted to the requirements of different models. For the ‘Rexoports’ it was laid on its side.

The ‘Prismatic’ horn was initially paired with the older mica-based ‘Autophonic’ reproducer but soon after its introduction the next generation ‘Rexophonic’ reproducer became available and the Rexonola ‘Prismaphonic’ instruments were born...

Released to considerable acclaim, ‘Prismaphonicinstruments were seen as a major improvement over Rexonolas of the pre-electric recording era. This isn’t too surprising given the improved tonal qualities of the new electrical recordings and the fact that the ‘Rexophonic’ reproducer was often paired with a ‘Prismatic’ horn which completely occupied available cabinet space... as in the Rexonola ‘Prismaphonic’ Model 60 below and reviewed here... However, collectors today don’t esteem these later instruments to the same extent as older acoustic machines.
